We are the Champion AGAIN !!

2013 Charity Table Tennis TournamentCongrats to WYKAAO Team A (David Ho, Mike Yam, Allan Lee, Michael Luk) for winning the new Alumni Cup in the New Horizon Lions Club 5th Charity Table Tennis tournament at MTTC today.

First runner-up  (which we beat 3-0) is Cheung Chuk Shan College Alumni with two OTTA high ranked players, 2nd runner-up is last year’s champion Ying Wa College Old Boys Association with a huge support group.

Other participants include WYKAAO Team B, Raimondi College Old Boys’ Association, DBS, Tsung Tsin College Alumni and Victoria Technical School Alumni.

A job well done and displaying true Wah Yan spirit throughout the tournament!

WYKAAO Team B (Wilfred Wei, Bill Ip and Chris Tam with Sonny Sie a late scratch due to injury) had a very hard fight in a group consisting of CCS ( 1st runner-up), DBS, #4 seed and 4th in final overall standing (we lost 2-3 with several 3 setters) and beat Raimondi College 3-0 and showed continuous progress).

Thank you for our usual great supporters who have come to cheer and shared in the glory: Tim Cheung, Sonny Sie, George Cheng, Millie Luk (wife of Michael Luk), Vinnie Yam (wife of Mike Yam) and our honourable advisor, Mr. Anthony Ho.

Some of the players and Coach Diana Zhu went for celebration dinner after.

Thank you all, players and cheer leaders (George, Roger, Sonny & John Tsui) and spouses, for keeping us together to perform at a high level. Recognition also goes to Coach Diana 朱娟 who gave us rally support and coaching at crucial  matches.

Thank you Tim Cheung for providing us with 1st class catering that kept us energized throughout lunch and many ideas at post game banquet. Really appreciate.

Have a fantastic weekend and thank you David for mobilizing a strong team and flying back last night to lead Team A.

We will do it again on 9/22 in New Horizon Lion’s Club 5th Charity Tournament.

For those with prior engagement and not able to join us today, here are the results.

Team A, (David Ho, Mike Yam, Alan Lee, Michael Luk) despite being  5th seeded, beat 4th seed Ying Wa Team A 3-2,  then ,Raimondi College 3-0 to come out first in Group D (there are 4 groups of 3 teams each) , beat DBS 3-0 in round of 8, beat La Salle Team A (2nd seed) 3-2 in semi and finish it off with a convincing 4-1 win over 3rd seed Cheung Chuk Shan College (3rd seed) as 12 teams tourney champion.

Congratulations !

Our doubles (David Ho/Allan Lee and  Mike Yam/Allen Lee remained undefeated throughout the tournament and are critical success factors. Mike Yam won 3 points in final and won all his singles in other pre- final matches including a win over Danny Leung (LSC A) whom LM beat last year with some sweat. Allan Lee lost a  tough 2-3 in his first single but had a great performance in his double with Mike and 2nd single. Top seed Munsang College ended up 4th, losing to La Salle Team A. Quite an upset.

Team B (Wilfred Wei, Bill Ip, Jeff Mah & Chris Tam) lost to first runner
up Cheung Chuk Shan College 1-3 and then 1-3 to La Salle B in round
robin (did not advance) with Bill Ip and Wilfred Wei/Chris Tam winning  a point each.

Mike Yam did his part, silver for  Men’s A Single on Sunday and got POLYU 2 points, losing to a 2,000 point rated HKU player/coach Jacky Fok (MTTC). He was rusty and anxious in early matches but played a much better 3rd game against Jacky.

Bill Ip’s MX team was placed in a tough group and did not advance. Good luck to fast recovery from hand injury. Need you!

Chris Tam showed up direct from airport to watch the finals of Men’s and Ladies Single between his HKU & my POLYU (captained by Sandy Chu of Mung Sang whom we will face 8/10).

HKU beat reigning champion POLYU by 1 point overall and reversed last year’s final results. Got HK Cup.

Alex Lam (was from WYHK, I heard) played MD A Final (beat HKU Sidney’s MD team in 5 sets) but lost bad against BU’s Chung.

Officiating was good and cheer groups loud as expected.

Alex Pang (whom we will face at JS 8/10 from Chung Chuk San) won B MD Final for POLYU..

La Salle had Danny (#1 player)  & Eric (#3 player) as spectators and watched both Mike & Bill played.

Most of Ying Wah’s teams for 8/10 was playing.

2013 Egypt Junior & Cadet Open – ITTF Premium Junior Circuit

Hong Kong very much set the tone in the first stage of the Junior Boys’ Team event at the Egypt Junior and Cadet Open in Ismailia on the opening day of play, Wednesday 19th June 2013.

The top seeded duo of Lam Siu Hang 林兆恒 and Li Hon Ming imposed their authority on proceedings by recording a three matches to nil victory over the Egypt ‘C’ Team formed by Ahmed Dabous and Amed Mabrouk, before handing out the same punishment to the India ‘A’ Team partnership of Utkarsh Gupta and Sabhya Virmani.

Equally their Hong Kong colleague, Kwan Man Ho enjoyed success; he lined up alongside Brazil’s Hugo Calderano (top seed in singles), the pair occupying the third seeded position in the event.

HK Junior Girls is seed 2nd behind powerful USA team led by Ariel Hsing & Lily Zhang (Seeded top 2 in singles also, but the next 3 single seeds are all from HKG) and HK is top team seed in Cadet Girls.

Play in the team events concludes on Thursday 20th June 2013.Hong Kong’s Lam Siu Hang was the player to cause the biggest upset on the opening day of play, Wednesday 27th February 2013, at the Italian Junior and Cadet Open in Lignano.

Not only did he cause the biggest upset, he caused the host nation the greatest grief.

The 16 year old beat Italy’s Leonardo Mutti in five games (10-12, 11-6, 12-10, 11-2, 11-9) to book his place in the quarter-finals against all odds.

Leonardo Mutti, the winner of the Cadet Boys’ Singles title at the European Youth Championships in Istanbul in 2010, was the no.2 seed in Lignano; conversely Lam Siu Hang was the no.9 seed.

Here is a clip of Lam Siu Hang in action.
