2013 Egypt Junior & Cadet Open – ITTF Premium Junior Circuit

Hong Kong very much set the tone in the first stage of the Junior Boys’ Team event at the Egypt Junior and Cadet Open in Ismailia on the opening day of play, Wednesday 19th June 2013.

The top seeded duo of Lam Siu Hang 林兆恒 and Li Hon Ming imposed their authority on proceedings by recording a three matches to nil victory over the Egypt ‘C’ Team formed by Ahmed Dabous and Amed Mabrouk, before handing out the same punishment to the India ‘A’ Team partnership of Utkarsh Gupta and Sabhya Virmani.

Equally their Hong Kong colleague, Kwan Man Ho enjoyed success; he lined up alongside Brazil’s Hugo Calderano (top seed in singles), the pair occupying the third seeded position in the event.

HK Junior Girls is seed 2nd behind powerful USA team led by Ariel Hsing & Lily Zhang (Seeded top 2 in singles also, but the next 3 single seeds are all from HKG) and HK is top team seed in Cadet Girls.

Play in the team events concludes on Thursday 20th June 2013.Hong Kong’s Lam Siu Hang was the player to cause the biggest upset on the opening day of play, Wednesday 27th February 2013, at the Italian Junior and Cadet Open in Lignano.

Not only did he cause the biggest upset, he caused the host nation the greatest grief.

The 16 year old beat Italy’s Leonardo Mutti in five games (10-12, 11-6, 12-10, 11-2, 11-9) to book his place in the quarter-finals against all odds.

Leonardo Mutti, the winner of the Cadet Boys’ Singles title at the European Youth Championships in Istanbul in 2010, was the no.2 seed in Lignano; conversely Lam Siu Hang was the no.9 seed.

Here is a clip of Lam Siu Hang in action.

莊智淵 uses Butterfly Tenergy 05 and 64 rubber and is only 5′ 6″ at 130 lb.

Attached is a clip of him playing against Joo Se Hyuk one  year ago at Dortmund WTTC in Team QF to illustrate some of the points in above article but when he excel and theory dispelled.

Joo Se-Hyuk (born January 20, 1980 in Seoul) is a South Korean table tennis player who has revolutionized the way players think about the defensive style.[2][3] He was the finalist at the 2003 World Table Tennis Championships and is a member of the South Korean National Team.  Joo is 5′ 11″ at 150 lb.

Future Team format & 2013 World Team Classic Mar 28 -31

1. It is likely we will play international team format with the tourneys we could be participating  (DBS friendly 4/21 , JS :6/29?  & Lions Charity (fall 2013)

Singe, Single, double, single, single

http://www.ittf.com/World_Events/2012OG/Specific_Reg.pdf

2. I am prepared to field 2 teams on each occasion and since this is a no obligation participation basis from all of us , despite deep down we wish to be performing at our best for our Alma Mata, I can only encourage all of us to try to come and practice (especially on double) since LSC, YWC & DBS have been doing that !

3. I have always preached doubles with players all working on their skills. There are FIVE continents in 1/8 in this week’s World Team. On even Stephen match up, the likely victor is  to be the team that wins 2 singles and the double either in 3-0 or 3-2.

4. In this week’s world team classic, several critical games were dictated by the 3rd game (double)

Video on below link:

http://www.ittf.com/ittv/

In today’s World Team classic S/F match up (hot from press) Men: China beat Japan 3-1 (lost double), Taipei beat Egypt (which surprised Germany with a 3-2 victory..again in doubles).

Women: Japan beat Singapore (3-2 , doubles), China best HK (3-0 but tight double game). HK got into 1/4 by a hard fought 3-2 win over Korea in Group (double again). This final is a repeat of Olympic 2012 (Japan beat Singapore 3-2 , doubles ).

Doubles Ends Duel
The writing was now on the wall; in the past Singapore has been able to field a strong doubles partnership for the third match of a fixture, often in the guise of Li Jiawei and Wang Yuegu.

Both have now retired from international play; the doubles partnership in Guangzhou has always been Yu Mengyu with the defender Isabelle Siyun Li. An attacking player partnering a predominantly backspin player is arguably not ideal and certainly the combination is not as strong as Li Jiawei in harness with Wang Yuegu

London Repeat
At the London 2012 Olympic Games Sayaka Hirano and Kasumi Ishikawa had beaten Li Jiawei and Wang Yuegu to book their place in the final. (This was an upset and the deciding game !!)

In Guangzhou they accounted for Isabelle Siyun Li and Yu Mengyu (11-7, 9-11, 11-3, 11-6) to achieve the same result; a place in the final.

5. On paper, LSC/YWC are neck to neck (favouring YWC with their doubles)  and WYK/DBS (in my humble opinion) favouring us. Depending on the format and draw, we could be 2nd. 3rd or 4thor even further down., depending on strength of other unknowns.

6. It’s up to you guys and with an interest group going I would like to enter 2 teams so that every one will have some fun in competition and brag to our better halves. I am just a facilitator.

Friendly match with DBS on Sunday 4/21/2013 at MTTC

DBS has confirmed our friendly match against their Team A & Team B (they have 7 -8 people coming)

It is likely they (and us) wish to test out different combination for the June Inter school tourney (BOTH Raimondi & LSC are trying to organized and CCTTA has been booked for 6/29 Saturday). Kindly reserve that date  6/29/2013 in advance in your calendar.

I made some executive decision while on the phone with Henry Wong of DBS today and spoke to Karen of MTTC about blocking off some tables for us for 4/21. Those with gum sole shoes can play on matted side and others on the wooden floor side.

Every one will play either single or double that day. We are in this together !

Team A Wilfred (volunteer to play doubles only), David, Michael, Bill, Chris

Team B Sonny, Jeff, John, Victor, George

There may be a teaser game of MX if Margaret Law comes on DBS side and we would invite John/Kathy to play against Danny/Margaret.

Games starts at 1.00 PM on Sunday 4/21/2013 (format to be decided but could be like the Lions Club Charity Tourney. Late arrivals will be placed as later player for the team. This is a friendly match up  or dry run. I hope all hands are on deck by 2 pm latest.
