World Junior Champion Ousts Olympic Champion to Cause Quarter-Final Upset 2/17/2013

Winner of the Girls’ Singles event at the Volkswagen World Junior Championships just over two months ago in the Indian city of Hyderabad, China’s Zhu Yuling 朱雨玲 was the player to cause the one surprise in the Women’s Singles quarter-finals at the ITTF 2013 World Tour Kuwait Open on Sunday 17th February.

She beat 25 year old Li Xiaoxia,李晓霞 the reigning Olympic and World champion in six games (11-13, 11-7, 9-11, 11-13, 11-5, 11-9) to secure her place in the penultimate round.

Success over the Olympic champion is surely a cause for unbridled rejoicing for an 18 year old, a win to remember; for Zhu Yuling 朱雨玲it was just another day at the office. There was no twinkle of emotion, just a shake of the hands with opponent and officials, followed by a quiet walk to the tiered seating.

Her doubles 陈梦/朱雨玲 ended in SF (defeated by石川佳纯/森园美咲 and then got disqualified because her partner’s paddle was illegal upon post game examination).

Have a great Family Day tomorrow and if you are bored, watch Kuwait Open singles SF and Final for doubles (?) on ittf. (matches mentioned above are already there now). Select Kuwait Open video from 7.30 am GMT on 2/18
